“See one, do one, tech one.”

Students retain lectures, concepts, + teachings when they practice and collaborate among their peers. Collaboration is key to forming connections and deeper understanding of concepts. Students teaching each other in a collaborative environment is an important learning tool.

When designing for students, it’s important to encourage collaboration. Our design team has provided three key elements for designing a collaborative learning space.

Every Space is a Learning Space

In the process of designing a collaborative learning space, all available areas should be considered spaces for learning. Collaborative spaces should not only be inviting, but provide an atmosphere to get work done. Individual study nooks provide space for focused study, while large tables and chairs support group projects and sharing information.

Integrate Technology

With the rise of the pandemic, technology has become more important than ever. Seamless integration of technology into classroom furniture and lessons can empower students to create personalized paths to learning:

  • Flat screen TV’s for device mirroring

  • Charging outlets incorporated into furniture

  • Videoconferencing applications for virtual learning

Make it Flexible

Furniture should be easy to move, enabling easy transitions between group and independent learning. Students should have a variety of seating, or standing options, from traditional desk chairs to bean bags, sofas, stools, and standing desks.
